Helping a sick mother to keep her son in school

Note: At the Denver Actors Fund, anonymity of aid recipients is presumed and fully protected, unless and until the recipient chooses to have his or her story told.

Financial-aid recipient: Laura Adducci is the Program Director at Mirror Image Arts, a nonprofit outreach performance company whose mission is to take a sustainable approach to bullying prevention, and to empower young voices through applied theatre. Laura, a native of Lafayette who graduated from Metro State, directed “Bullying & Friendship” and the current “Your Voice Matters,” which has been touring schools for the past year. She is also an actor at Go Voices, a voice talent agency. She and her husband, Lou, the registrar for Denver Center Education, are the parents of 3-year-old Lucien.

DAF Her story: After several trips to the doctor, an E.R. visit, an ultrasound and blood tests, it was determined that Laura needed to have her gallbladder removed. Insurance covered the majority of the costs associated with the surgery, but the couple was still left with more than $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. That wiped out the family savings, creating financial stress for the family on top of the surgery, which took place Oct. 20. Laura has more healing to do and is not allowed to pick up her kiddo for another week.

How we will help: The Denver Actors Fund board of directors has approved a gift of $610. That’s the equivalent of what these two working parents pay for a month of preschool tuition. We later added  $200 to the total.

A message from Laura Adducci: “The moment I discovered I needed surgery, two thoughts ran through my mind in quick succession. One: Surely there’s some hippy-dippy way of getting out of this, and two: We’re a nonprofit family. How in the world are we going to afford it? Unfortunately, there was no way to get out of having the surgery, but very fortunately, The Denver Actor’s Fund exists. I am so proud to be a part of this community of talented, thoughtful and generous souls. To everyone who ever has and ever will contribute to this fund, please accept my great thanks. You have provided much needed relief to my little family, and for that I am incredibly grateful.”
