DESCRIPTION:MONDAY\, APRIL 13: Please join us Monday\, April 13\, for Town Hall Arts Center’s Industry Night performance of “The Wiz.” Our friends at Town Hall are continuing their incredible commitment to designate one performance per run with 100 percent of all proceeds from ticket and concession sales to be donated to The Denver Actors Fund. “The Wiz” was a smash Broadway musical in 1975 that reimagines “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” with a soulful\, urban twist\, blending African American culture and style with rock and gospel music. The story follows Dorothy\, who is whisked away by a tornado from Harlem to the magical land of Oz\, where she embarks on a journey down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wizard\, joined by the Scarecrow\, Tin Man\, THE Lion and of course\, Toto. In James Ijames’ play\, previously staged at Curious Theatre. Jane\, an art curator\, wants to “change the face of the museum to truly reflect America.” She excludes her artist friend\, Gus\, a white gay man\, arguing that “white dudes” have had their turn. Outraged and desperate to have his work included\, Gus hires Vanessa\, a Black actress\, to perform as a brash political artist who will fit the museum’s desire for “new voices.” The play spins out of comic control as it explores issues of race\, gender\, sexuality and art. Directed by Julie K. Wolf. This continues Firehouse Producing Artistic Director Helen Hand’s steadfast commitment to designate one performance of every run with 100 PERCENT of proceeds donated to the DAF.
