Brian Mallgrave: ‘I wasn’t sure what the future would look like after my accident’

Who we helped: Brian Mallgrave, who has been an active member of the Denver metro theater community on and off stage since 2000, serves as Director of Scenic Design and Properties at the Arvada Center. As an actor, one of his many starring roles was as the Emcee in BDT Stage’s “Cabaret.” His recent productions as a scenic designer include Disney’s “Frozen” and “The Mousetrap” for the Arvada Center, and “Rock of Ages” for Veritas Productions at the PACE Center. He is now a five-time Henry Award recipient for Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design. His work has also been recognized multiple times by the True West Awards, the Denver Post Ovation Awards, Westword and OnStage Colorado. In 2019, he was honored by the University of Nebraska Omaha as an Outstanding Theatre Alum.
His medical story: Brian was involved in a near-fatal car accident last April 14. He underwent reconstructive surgery on his pelvis, hip and femur, which are now kept together by eight pins and a plate.
How we helped Brian: Brian’s out-of-pocket, post-insurance medical bills initially reached well past $8,000. The Denver Actors Fund immediately approved paying Brian’s incoming medical bills all the way up to our maximum per-case limit, which would have covered all but about $1,600 of his burden. And we did. Then, something that never happens … happened. Brian’s insurance company reconsidered its obligation and refunded to us a significant portion of the amount paid by the Denver Actors Fund. Since then, the DAF has helped Brian a bit with some of his physical therapy co-pays but, as the bouncy ball rests at the moment, the DAF has supported Brian with $2,971.
‘I APPRECIATE YOU SO MUCH. THIS REALLY HAS MADE RECOVERY THAT MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE’ – BRIAN MALLGRAVE
