Only a brain aneurysm (and a pandemic) could slow down Bernie Cardell
About Bernie Cardell: Over the past 20 years, True West Award-winning actor and director Bernie Cardell has been in all likelihood the single busiest person in Colorado theatre, having once booked 11 shows in one calendar year. He was directing a shortened run of “Marvin’s Room” at Vintage Theatre at the time of the COVID shutdown and later co-directed a streaming version of the thriller “Murderers.” Cardell, who was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Las Vegas, moved to Denver in 2001. Since then, he has worked for more than 30 local theatre companies, most regularly with Spotlight and Vintage Theatres, demonstrating an impressive range spanning directing “Angels in America” to starring in the comedy farce “Run for Your Wife.” He is currently Vintage Theatre’s Artistic Director (and a monthly donor to The Denver Actors Fund). “Bernie has a clear vision that theatre is supposed to be a place for entertainment and escapism at its most accessible level,” said award-winning actor Emma Messenger. “He finds the joy in everything.”
His medical story: Bernie has been through a scary medical ordeal worthy of the stage, culminating with surgery in October to repair a brain aneurysm. Despite having an outside job with health insurance, Bernie was left with a whopper of an out-of-pocket bill from CU-Health in the amount of $3,651.68. As is always the case with major medical procedures, it is not yet known whether all of his bills have come in.
How we have helped: The Denver Actors Fund board of directors has voted to pay the full amount of Bernie’s outstanding balance, or $3,651.68.

ONGOING: “Quarantine Week by Weak” is a new photographic coffee-table book by Susannah McLeod and her wife, Chloe McLeod, who chronicled their home life during the COVID19 shutdown with a lighthearteded photo series documenting their lives during quarantine. They produced more than 35 sets of humorous photos comparing the beginning of quarantine to later in the “stay-at-home” period. Susannah pulled out her camera and we started to play,” said Chloe McLeod. As popularity for the series grew on Instagram and after a feature in Westword, the couple started exploring options to publish the series as a book to benefit The Denver Actors Fund.
