When his broken finger required surgery, The Denver Actors Fund helped him get the bone and his bills aligned
About Nathaniel Quinn: In addition to being Candlelight Dinner Playhouse’s Master Electrician, Light Board Operator and Children’s Theatre Director in Johnstown, Nathaniel Quinn has worked regularly as an electrician at Denver’s Curious Theatre and as Scenic Designer for the Fort Collins Children’s Theatre. He also has directed, designed and stage managed several times at the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre, and serves as Artistic Director of Wolverine Theatrics in Cheyenne. In Greeley, he restructured and developed a theatre program for Northridge High School. Most recently, he directed Candlelight’s children’s theatre production of “Flat Stanley” and worked the light board for “Camelot.”
His medical story: Last June, Nathaniel broke the little finger on his right hand. After multiple X-rays, he was told he would be fine. But by October, he was experiencing sharper pain and limited finger mobility. A visit to another orthopedist found that not only was the bone misaligned, it was twisted as well. Nathan underwent surgery to re-break and re-align the bone.
How we have helped: Nathaniel paid all of his own out-of-pocket medical expenses leading up to the surgery, and The Denver Actors Fund board of directors has voted unanimously to pay all of his associated costs since, or $2,064.

A message from Nathaniel: “I am incredibly grateful for The Denver Actors Fund. When I learned that my broken finger hadn’t been set properly and I would need surgery to correct it, I panicked because I knew I couldn’t afford the simple surgery. I live in Cheyenne, but work in Colorado, so I figured the worst they could tell me was no. But not only was The DAF willing and able to assist me financially, their volunteers were incredibly kind and patient with me. I’ve never had an issue like this before, so this was uncharted territory for me. On top of that, navigating the Wyoming insurance system was more stressful than the break and the surgery combined. Instead of leaving me on my own to struggle through this, The DAF team remained beside me through the entire chaotic journey, asking me helpful questions, offering calming advice when I was ready to lose my mind – and most important, reaching out to me to see if new information had come through from billing agencies or insurance when we were playing the waiting game. These acts of human kindness, in addition to financial assistance, make all the difference in the world to me.”
A note on eligibility: Nathaniel resides in Cheyenne and drives to and from Johnstown for work each day. The Denver Actors Fund has a residency rule that requires a qualified recipient to have lived in the state of Colorado for at last six of the past 12 months. This was established to ensure that donor funds would be used to help members of the Colorado theatre community more so than visiting artists whose permanent residency is in another state. Given that Nathaniel works full-time in the Colorado theatre community, and that Cheyenne is located just 8 miles north of the Colorado border, the Board unanimously voted to waive the residency requirement in his case.

‘Miscast’ is the major annual fundraiser for The Denver Actors Fund. ONGOING: “Quarantine Week by Weak” is a new photographic coffee-table book by Susannah McLeod and her wife, Chloe McLeod, who chronicled their home life during the COVID19 shutdown with a lighthearteded photo series documenting their lives during quarantine. They produced more than 35 sets of humorous photos comparing the beginning of quarantine to later in the “stay-at-home” period. Susannah pulled out her camera and we started to play,” said Chloe McLeod. As popularity for the series grew on Instagram and after a feature in Westword, the couple started exploring options to publish the series as a book to benefit The Denver Actors Fund.
