Heather McClain: $5,525

When a medical challenge landed her son in the hospital, Denver Actors Fund allowed mom to focus on healing

Who we helped: Heather McClain is a busy director, choreographer and actor in Northern Colorado. (Not to mention, former police officer.) Currently, Heather is directing and choreographing “The Winter Wonderettes” for the Longmont Theatre Company, and playing Margaret White in “Carrie: The Musical” for the Harrington Arts Alliance in Loveland. Last year, Heather was the dance captain for OpenStage Theatre & Company’s production of “Cabaret” in Fort Collins. She has performed Off-Broadway in “The Donkey Show” and toured nationally as Laura Ingalls Wilder in “Growin’ Up on the Prairie.” Other favorite roles have included: “Man of LaMancha” (Aldonza), “Kiss Me Kate” (Lilli/Kate), “42nd Street” (Dorothy Brock), “Nunsense” (Sister Hubert), “Damn Yankees” (Lola) and “9 to 5” (Judy).

Her medical story: In March, Heather and David McClain’s ‘s 3-year-old son was treated for an ear infection that developed into a much more serious medical emergency that involved three nights in the children’s intensive-care unit. After insurance, Heather and her husband were left with out-of-pocket ambulance and hospital expenses totaling $4,679.92.

How we helped: The Denver Actors Fund has paid Heather’s outstanding medical bills. Including previous support, The Denver Actors Fund has now made $5,524.92 in medical assistance available to the McClain family.

‘KNOWING THE DAF WOULD BE THERE MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE WHEN MY SON WAS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL.’ – HEATHER McCLAIN

A message from Leanne and Heather: “My family is so thankful to the Denver Actors Fund for their assistance. I’ve worked in several theatrical productions over the years that have assisted in replenishing their funds just knowing, one day, I would need their help. Having the assurance that the DAF would be there made a world of difference when my son was admitted to Children’s Hospital back in March. I wasn’t stressed about our hospital stay and what the cost was going to be. I could just focus on helping him get better. I look forward to supporting them again in the future and ‘paying it forward’ to the next family in need!”

Help us to replenish?: Since June 1, The Denver Actors Fund sent out $24,000 more in medical assistance than we have brought in. And that figure would be much higher if The Candlelight in Johnston had not just sent us $10,000 in audience collections during its run of “Cats.” If you would like to help us replenish so we we can keep helping other Colorado theater artists, simply mail checks in any amount made out to Denver Actors Fund, P.O. Box 11182, Denver, CO 80212. Or use this donation link, with our humble thanks.

Heather McClain and Scott Hurst starred in a 2017 production of ‘Kiss Me Kate’ at The Candlelight in Johnstown.
